The outer bag latch, Kirby part 196401S. It is the catch that hooks the bag top down and holds the assembly closed, and Kirby used the same latch across the Generation machines, the Ultimate G, the Diamond Edition, the Sentria and the Avalir.
You know it has gone when the bag top pops open on its own, or when it takes a determined push to click and then does not stay. The plastic hook wears round at the tip, and after years of being flicked open it eventually snaps off, leaving the bag to swing free.
It is one of the cheapest parts on the machine and one of the most irritating when it is missing, since nothing else holds the bag shut. Fitting the new latch takes minutes and no special tools.
