Part 173897S is the upper cord hook for the Kirby Generation 5, the anchor the power cord wraps around at the top of the handle fork. It ships in maroon or black depending on stock, both colors Kirby used on these machines.
Hooks break at the base, and the cause is nearly always the cord being hauled off in one pull rather than unwound. Once the upper hook has gone there is nothing holding the top of the coil, so the cord slips down, unwraps in storage and trails on the floor in use. Trailing cords get run over, and a nicked cord is a far more expensive problem than the hook that caused it.
It fits the Generation 5. Replacement takes a screwdriver, and it is worth looking over the lower hook and the cord jacket while you are there.
