The field coil is the stationary winding that creates the magnetic field the armature turns inside, and part 103967 is the factory-original coil for the Kirby Dual Sanitronic 50 and Dual Sanitronic 80. On machines of this age it is one of the two windings that decide whether the motor lives or dies.
A failed coil rarely announces itself with smoke. The motor hums without turning, trips the breaker, or does nothing at all when the switch is thrown while the cord and switch both test fine. Owners of these Kirbys usually chase the switch and the carbon brushes first and arrive here last.
Fitting it means a full motor teardown, so unless you have done one before this is work for a technician. Confirm the machine is a D50 or D80 before ordering.
