Part 173889S is the upper cord hook for the Kirby Generation 3. It mounts high on the handle fork and gives the power cord its top anchor point.
Generation 3 machines are old enough now that the original hooks have had thirty years of cord being dragged off them at an angle. The plastic loses its flexibility with age, then splits at the base of the hook, often while the machine is being put away rather than during cleaning. After that the cord slips off, unwinds in storage and trails on the floor where it can be run over.
This is the upper hook for the Gen 3 specifically. If the lower hook shows the same hairline cracks around its base, do both while the machine is on its side. They are the same age, and the second rarely lasts much longer than the first.
