The nozzle guard on a Kirby Generation 3 is the bumper strip across the front of the cleaning head, and this is the genuine Kirby replacement, part 140489.
Its job is to be hit. Baseboards, chair legs, door frames and stair risers all meet the front of the nozzle, and the guard absorbs that so the casting behind it stays intact. What kills it is age rather than any single impact: the material stiffens, hairline cracks open at the corners, and a section eventually breaks off. From then on the nozzle marks whatever it touches.
Fitting a new guard is quick, needs no tools, and costs a fraction of the nozzle it protects. Confirm your model plate reads Generation 3 before ordering, as Kirby changed the nozzle profile between generations and guards are not interchangeable.
