Kirby's Generation 5, including the Cabernet finish, uses switch pedal 110397 at the base of the upright. It is the piece your foot lands on to switch the vacuum on and off, and it covers the switch mechanism underneath.
Age and repeated pressure crack the pedal around its pivot. Once that happens the travel goes vague, the switch stops being worked cleanly, and the exposed hardware collects the grit the vacuum kicks up along the floor. Owners often find the machine starts on the second or third press instead of the first.
Fitting the correct pedal returns hands-free control and closes the base back up. Unplug the machine before removing base hardware, and confirm you have a Generation 5, as Kirby changed the pedal between generations.
