The valve handle works the suction diverter, the valve that sends airflow either to the floor nozzle or out to the hose. This is the black handle, part B480-8914B, for the Maytag M1200 and for the Riccar R30D, R30P and R30PET and Simplicity S30D, S30P and S30PET Synchrony uprights.
The handle takes a firm push every time you change modes, and after enough cycles it fatigues and snaps at the pivot. With it broken the valve stays wherever it was left: either the hose has no suction or the floor nozzle has none, and there is no way to switch over without taking the machine apart.
A new handle restores positive control of the diverter. This is the black version, which is the one to order if the rest of your trim is black.
