It gets worked at every service and takes a knock whenever the vacuum is set down hard on its base. Once the button cracks or its catch face wears smooth, one of two things happens: the cover fights you on the way off, or it stops latching and works itself loose in use. A cover that is not held closed lets exhaust air out where it was never meant to go, and it can rattle its way open mid-clean.
