This is the valve switch cover for Riccar MV series machines, cataloged under reference GA800 and stocked as part B480-1814. Rather than being the switch or valve mechanism itself, it is the molded cap fitted over the switch so the actuator can still move freely while dust, lint and stray fingers stay off the mechanism underneath.

Age, plus the repeated heating and cooling that a running vacuum body goes through, is what makes plastic covers like this one turn brittle well before the switch itself wears out.
