Toothed pulleys are what make a geared belt different from an ordinary flat one: rather than gradually stretching, this design holds its timing right up until a tooth actually shears off. That failure is almost always triggered by a jam, whether from wound-up hair, a stray thread, or debris caught between the roller and the brush housing, that forces the belt to keep transmitting power it cannot physically deliver.

Suction and brush drive are independent of one another here, so airflow at the hose stays close to full strength even after this belt has failed. A sudden loss of carpet pickup on a machine whose attachments still work normally is therefore a belt symptom, not a motor symptom, and no amount of emptying the bin will change it.

Cut away hair wound onto the roller ends before the replacement goes on, then spin the roller to confirm it runs free. Any drag left in the roller will shear a new belt as quickly as it shore off the last one, which is why belts that fail twice in a season are almost never a belt quality problem.
