The pump is what puts cleaning solution onto the carpet, so its failure has a distinctive signature. The vacuum motor sounds completely normal, the brush turns, the machine feels entirely alive, and nothing comes out of the tips when you pull the trigger. A pump on the way out is quieter about it, buzzing away and delivering a mist where it used to lay down a proper wet band.
Rule out the cheap things first: an empty or badly seated solution tank, a scaled spray tip, a kinked feed line. If all of those are clear and the tips stay dry, the pump is your answer.
