This two-brush carbon set, part 833450-57, is the replacement brush kit Ametek lists for four of its Lamb 7.2 inch bypass tangential motors: 117470-12, 117500-12, 117500-13 and 117549-12. All four are 120 volt units from the 7.2-Premier family, which is why one kit covers them and why the set is sold against motor numbers rather than against a single machine model.
Carbon brushes carry current from the motor's stationary wiring to the spinning commutator, and they are designed to wear down gradually as they do it. A motor running on tired brushes starts sparking visibly through the housing vents, loses power under load or cuts out and restarts on its own, and eventually gives off a hot, burnt smell as the brush face runs down toward the spring.
Read the number stamped on your motor before ordering rather than going by the shape of the brush, since Ametek's 230 and 240 volt motors on the same frame take a different kit. Pull the old brushes and compare their length and the holder shape against this set, and replace both together so wear stays even across the commutator. While the motor is open, look over the commutator surface itself, because a brush left in service too long can groove or discolor the copper it rides against, and a scored commutator will chew through a fresh brush faster than a clean one would.
