On a cordless machine, the charger is usually the first thing worth checking when the vacuum stops holding a charge, since it fails more often than the battery pack it feeds. Watch for a status light that never comes on when the unit is docked, run time that has dropped off noticeably in recent weeks, or a machine that only seems to charge when the cord is held at a particular angle. Any of those point at the charger or its cord rather than the battery itself, and a charger that feels warm while just sitting plugged in and idle is another sign it is on its way out. Leave the machine docked overnight the first time you use a replacement, since a pack that has sat low for a while can take longer than a single charge cycle to show its full run time again.

Inspect the cord where it flexes at the plug and where it meets the charger body, since that is where the wire tends to break down internally long before the outer jacket shows any damage. If the machine still will not take a charge after swapping the adapter, the battery pack is the next thing to check, and a pack that has sat fully discharged for a long stretch may need a little longer on the new charger before it responds.
