A worn or missing adapter announces itself the same way every time. The tool wobbles at the joint, air draws in where the two pieces meet, and pickup at the nozzle falls off even though the motor sounds completely normal. Because the adapter sits upstream of everything else in the airflow path, a gap here costs more suction than the same gap would anywhere further along the hose.
