This is the height adjustment knob for Sanitaire 5800 Series commercial uprights, part number 71448355N. Turning it changes how low the nozzle rides above the floor.
A knob that has worn where it grips its shaft stops holding the setting you chose, so the height starts drifting on its own while the machine works. A knob that has broken off altogether leaves the machine stuck at whatever height it was last set to, which is rarely the right one for the floor in front of it. On a commercial route that covers low-pile carpet and hard floor in the same building, a setting that will not hold turns a quick change into a repeated annoyance.

Unplug the machine before changing the knob, and note the setting you were using so you can return to it once the new one is on. If the replacement still feels loose after it is fitted, the shaft it mounts to has worn as well, and a new knob on its own will not hold the adjustment.
