Part 174588 is the handle fork backplate for the Kirby Legend II, in the machine's maroon finish.
The backplate sits at the rear of the fork where the handle meets the body, a spot that takes knocks against furniture and door frames and gets loaded every time the machine is tipped back or lifted by the handle. Old plastic gives way at the screw holes first, and once a corner has broken the plate rattles against the fork as you clean.
Color matters here. A Legend II wearing a black plate borrowed from another model always looks patched, whereas this is the maroon part, so a machine that has been cleaned up properly stays consistent. Confirm your machine is a Legend II before ordering, and be gentle with the screws: over-tightening into aged plastic is what starts most of the cracks in the first place.
