The wheel selects how far the brush roller drops toward the floor, so a single machine can be set high for a deep domestic pile, low for a flat commercial loop, and lower still where a hard floor needs the head to sit close.
What fails is the detent mechanism inside the wheel. New, it stops firmly at each setting and you feel the step as you turn it.
