The shell does two jobs at once. It keeps dust and hair away from the drive components sitting under it, and it holds the clip points and screw locations in line so the head closes flat against the chassis. A cracked one manages neither, and the consequences show up gradually: debris working its way onto the belt and pulley, a rattle from the top of the head when it is pushed at speed, and a gap along one edge that grows every time the cover is taken off and refitted. Snapped locating tabs are the usual failure, followed by split screw bosses and scuffed edges on machines that spend their lives against skirting.
Fitting is straightforward with the head off the wand. Seat every tab before running the screws down, because forcing a shell that is not fully engaged is what cracks the next one, and inspect the belt and pulley while the interior is open.
