Belts rarely fail without warning. They stretch gradually long before they ever snap, and a stretched belt keeps turning the brushroll while quietly slipping under load, which is exactly how a machine can sound fine to the ear while carpet fiber and grit go untouched underneath. A scheduled belt change is far cheaper than the alternative: a worn brushroll that has run under-speed for months wears its own bearings and bristles well before the belt actually breaks.

A belt that has glazed to a shiny, hardened finish on its inner face is past due even if it has not visibly stretched, since glazed rubber loses its grip on the brushroll shaft regardless of how tight the belt still measures.
