The neck does two things at once. It carries the air path out of the head and up into the wand, and it lets the head pitch and turn while your hand keeps the wand steady. Wear shows up as a head that flops, resists turning, or clicks as it swings, and once the joint is loose the head stops following the wand cleanly.
