Its job is to brace the swivel neck where the head hinges away from the body, absorbing the side loads generated every time the machine is steered around a chair leg or pulled back out of a corner. Those loads are not large individually, but they arrive thousands of times a week in a busy house, and the support is what keeps them from reaching the neck's moving parts directly. Once it cracks, the neck moves in ways it was never meant to, the extra slop accelerates wear on everything around the joint, and the cable running through the pivot starts to flex over a shorter radius than it was designed for.
A fresh support tightens the front end back up. While the head is apart it is worth inspecting the mating pivot faces for scoring and looking over the cable run for chafing, since both are quick to check and awkward to reach later.
