An upright gets noticeably harder to push the moment one of its wheels stops turning freely. For the ESSENTIAL G machines the answer is 5819HG, supplied complete in light gray and shown as item 121 in the ESSENTIAL G4 G5 parts diagram. A single number serves the ESSENTIAL G1, G2, G4 and G5.
Tread and hub are one moulding, so nothing has to be pressed together and no bearing needs sourcing separately. The positions surrounding item 121 are the ones to read when a machine drags or leans at a corner, because they decide whether the wheel is genuinely at fault: axle assembly 5051HG at item 117 comes with wheels, pedal and spring already on it, orange foot pedal 5059OR is item 119, the wheel return spring 2010 is item 120, and axle clamp 2014ER is item 122. An axle that has taken a set produces a complaint close enough to a tired wheel to be mistaken for one, so roll the machine across a flat floor and watch whether it is the tread or the axle line that wanders.
Wear itself announces itself the moment the wheel is spun by hand. Grit driven into the tread, a flat from years spent parked in one position, or material missing from the rim all produce the same complaints — the vacuum pulls to one side and the push stroke gets heavier. On a machine with real service behind it, renewing both wheels in one go keeps the chassis sitting level and stops a new wheel taking more than its share of the load.
