Pet hair and ground-in grit are what this brush roll is for. It is the 14-inch agitator from the Bissell PowerGroom Pet 4104, sold under part number 2031283, and the same roll drops into the PowerForce Turbo 6585, the PowerGroom Helix Rewind 98N4, the PowerClean 92L3P and 92L3W, and the PowerGlide Pet 1044.
Bristles do not fail all at once. They shorten, splay and pack with hair until the vacuum stops pulling debris out of carpet and starts leaving tracks behind on a second pass. A squeal or a hot rubber smell usually means the roll is binding rather than turning freely. If the bristles look stubby held against a new one, or the end caps feel rough as you spin them, the roll is finished. Cutting away wound hair and thread every few weeks keeps the next one turning true and takes strain off the belt.
