The separator is the cyclonic section inside a bagless Bissell, the cone and shroud that spin dust out of the airstream before it reaches the filter. This replacement, part 1631288, fits the PowerForce Helix 3332 and 3333 as well as the 3534, 3675 and 3676.
Separators crack around their mounting points and warp where they clamp against the dirt cup. Once the seal is broken, air takes the shortcut instead of the spiral: suction at the nozzle falls off, the filter clogs far faster than it used to, and fine dust starts appearing where it never used to collect. It is easy to mistake for a blocked hose, so check the separator before stripping the rest of the machine.
Seat the new assembly squarely and make sure the dirt cup latches home against it.
