Rollers wear together because they take the same passes over the same floors, so renewing one and leaving its neighbour usually just pushes the job a few months down the road and leaves the head agitating unevenly across its width in the meantime. This set covers both positions in the housing. Where only the outer roller is tired, the edge roller on its own is 5250. Judge them at inspection by bristle height: once the rows sit level with the roller body the agitation has effectively stopped and the carpet is being cleaned by airflow alone, which is a slow way to notice that a vacuum has stopped earning its keep.

Fit the set with the drive in mind. The belt that turns the rollers on the AUTOMATIC X2, X5 and X8 is 5110, and a belt that has stretched or glazed will let a brand-new pair of rollers slip under load and imitate the very wear they were bought to cure. Clear any hair wrapped at the ends of the old rollers before the new pair goes in, so nothing is dragged into fresh bearings. The soft-filament version of this set is 5290GE.
