Horsehair is the reason to pick this brush over a nylon one. The filament is finer and gives more readily under pressure, so it clears dust from a lacquered picture frame, a glass shelf, a lamp base or a run of book spines without leaving the faint scratch pattern a stiffer bristle can work into a soft finish. Bristles that have splayed outward or bent into a permanent curve are the sign a replacement is due, since a splayed head sweeps dust along the surface instead of raising it toward the mouth of the tool.
