Deliberately simpler than its stablemates, the AUTOMATIC X8 leaves out the brush-mode button. The brush roll turns whenever the machine is running, which makes this the upright for a house laid mostly in carpet, where the roller was never going to be switched off in the first place. It does carry the headlight, and the finish is dark blue. The order code is 91566AM.

The X8 arrives with two boxes of part 5093AM, sixteen bags with sealing caps. In a house laid largely to carpet, which is the room this model was designed around, the roller keeps lifting grit out of the pile all day and the bag is where every bit of it ends up, so a stock on the shelf earns its place early.

The rest is standard SEBO practice for the AUTOMATIC X line: German assembly, a disposable bag instead of a bin, and a driven brush that works the pile rather than skating over the top of it. Fewer controls also means fewer things that can fail, which is a fair trade for anyone whose floors never called for the roller to be parked. The headlight does the same job here as across the range, lighting the floor immediately in front of the cleaning head so hair and grit under a bed or a sideboard are visible while you are cleaning rather than after.

Bagged collection is the other reason to buy an AUTOMATIC X. Everything the brush roll pulls out of a carpet is drawn into a sealed bag, the bag lifts out full and goes straight in the trash, and nothing has to be tipped, rinsed or dried before the machine is ready again. SEBO catalogs the X8 service parts individually, so this is a vacuum that gets repaired rather than replaced when something wears. It is supplied here by an authorized SEBO dealer, and because of that we extend SEBO's coverage free of charge to 10 years on the motor, 10 years on parts and 7 years of labor.
