Teeth change the way a belt fails. A flat belt slides quietly through a tight spot and hides the problem; a geared belt either drives in time or jumps, and a jump can be heard from across the room. Tip the machine and look for cracking in the roots between teeth, a polished glaze across the back face, or slack enough that the belt can be lifted clear of its pulley. Any one of the three earns a replacement.

Timing the job is worth a thought as well. Fit a new belt while the covers are off for other work rather than opening the same machine twice, and inspect the pulley teeth at the same moment, since a rounded pulley will chew through a new belt in short order.
