Spacing spring for non-clutch metal brushroll assemblies, part B624-0100. The spring takes up end play on the brushroll, holding it centered in the nozzle so the ends do not creep sideways and rub against the housing while the roller spins.
It is a small piece with an outsized effect. When the spacing spring is missing or has lost its tension, you tend to hear it before you see it: a rattle or scraping noise from the nozzle, uneven brush wear across the roller, or a belt that will not stay tracked. Because it is normally reused during a brushroll swap, it is often overlooked until the new roller behaves the same way the old one did.
