Gritty steering, or a neck that rocks when the body is held still, points straight at the pivot bearings. SEBO 5717 is the left-hand bearing, and it is one of the few components the company carries right across the upright range: item 111 on the AUTOMATIC X4/X5 drawing, item 107 on the AUTOMATIC X7/X8 drawing, item 112 on the ESSENTIAL G4/G5 drawing. What the bearing supports is the weight of the entire handle assembly as it swings from side to side, a load applied thousands of times a week in ordinary use. Once the bore goes oval the joint develops play, effort at the handle climbs, and the mouldings either side begin absorbing stress they were never shaped for. That is the argument for renewing a worn pivot early rather than late, because a bearing left to knock about eventually takes the swivel neck with it. Most repairers change left and right together once the neck has been opened, and the counterpart on the other side carries a different number depending on which family the machine belongs to.
