Necks flex at the same point thousands of times, and the conductors inside fatigue alongside the moulding. Symptoms usually arrive together: brush drive dropping out as the head is turned, followed by a joint that feels loose or will no longer recline flat for reaching under furniture. Sometimes the drive returns when the neck is held at a particular angle, which is as clear a sign as this fault gives. Mechanical damage shows separately as a crack around the pivot or a neck that has developed side-to-side play the machine never had when new.

Ordering the wrong wiring version is by far the most common error on this part, so confirm the two-wire layout before buying rather than matching on shape alone. The assembly is supplied complete, so nothing is carried over from the old one; note the lead routing before removal, and look over the swivel neck supports at the same time, parts 2311 on the right and 2312 on the left, because a fractured brace produces much the same vagueness at the joint and is a far smaller job to put right. A brace that hinges when flexed by hand has failed even if it still sits square under its screw.
