It is the strip of plastic that reaches a floor first, sitting in front of the roll, and it fixes the height at which the nozzle rides over the surface. That height is doing real work. It is what allows a pressure difference to build across the pile instead of the nozzle simply skating over it, so anything that alters the shape of the plate alters how much the machine picks up. Grit wears at the underside over years of use; one solid knock into a threshold or a step can split it in a moment. Once chipped or cracked, the plate stops sealing against the floor, and a share of the suction escapes through the damage.
