This gasket, part R1455, seals the carbon brush holder where it enters the motor housing on a Rainbow D3. The seal works in both directions: it stops air escaping at the holder, and it keeps dust out of the area around the brushes.
The second job is the one that matters most. Grit reaching a carbon brush acts as an abrasive between the brush and the commutator, so brushes wear out faster, the commutator picks up scoring, and the motor starts sparking sooner than it otherwise would. A dried, cracked gasket is a slow way of ruining expensive parts.
The brushes are exposed the moment the holder comes out, so measure them then. Fitting a new gasket over worn brushes is a wasted teardown you will be repeating shortly.
